FIRST KENYA ADVISORY MEETING
April 17th , 2007
Nairobi, Kenya

An all inclusive group of stakeholders on Hib and SPN surveillance form the Kenya Advisory Group. This group composed of Pediatrician/clinical representative from each surveillance site, Kenya Expanded Program of Immunization (KEPI), National Public Health laboratory (NPHL) and World health organization (WHO) surveillance representatives met on 17th April 2007. This group has been established to critically review performance of various aspects of surveillance in Kenya and make recommendations addressing identified challenges and needs, provide some form of peer review mechanism and support for the on going surveillance, ensure the surveillance activities get the necessary support from the collaborating partners to meet set targets and enhance the network functioning by regular sharing of data and experiences.

FOURTH NETWORK ANNUAL MEETING
November 9 - 10, 2006
Nairobi, Kenya

The two day conference had a half day of formal presentations on pneumococcal diseases and antibiotic resistance as well as a day and a half of practical laboratory sessions for the clinical and laboratory representative of the hospital. These provided opportunity for those involved to interact and discuss on areas that needed improvement with regards to the surveillance of Pneumococcal disease. NETWORK WORKSHOP MEETING
November 10 - 11, 2006
Naivasha, Kenya
The workshop was held separately from the second day of the conference and essentially aided netSPEAR to formulate 1. An acceptable future governance structure and processes by taking into account views from all the represented countries. 2. Each country’s need for Pneumococcal surveillance support in the future. 3. From number 2 form an intra-country team that will contribute in writing the next proposal for funding with clearly agreed roles. 4. Discuss and form an inter-country team for writing up and documentation of lessons learned in the first three years of netSPEAR.
 
SURVEILLANCE FOR VACCINE PREVENTABLE MENINGITIS AND PNEUMONIA MEETING
September 21, 2006
Nairobi, Kenya

This meeting organised by the Ministry of Health through the Kenya Expanded Programme on Immunisation (KEPI) is in line with the on going Hib surveillance by the ministry after the introduction of pentavalent vaccine in late 2001. The key objectives of the meeting was to share experiences from participating surveillance hospitals, reinforce good clinical and laboratory practices in the management of very sick infants and young children as part of the on going surveillance in six public hospitals in Kenya and demonstrate support and commitment of Ministry of Health top management for the surveillance activities. 5th Annual Network Meeting
November 13th - 14th 2008
Nairobi, Kenya

The 5th annual netSPEAR conference will be held at the KEMRI, Mbagathi conference hall in Nairobi, Kenya.  The two day conference will have a session on expert talks followed by review of the networks surveillance data and activities focusing on a selected aspect practical to surveillance on pneumococcal diseases and antibiotic resistance.

6th International Symposium on Pneumococci & Pneumococcal
8th to 12th June 2008

This scientific programme will cover all aspects of pneumococci and pneumococcal diseases, ranging from epidemiology, predisposition, etiology and pathogenic mechanisms, to prevention and treatment. Deadline for abstract submission is February 1st, 2008.

2nd East African Community International Health and Scientific Conference
26th – 28th March 2008
Arusha, Tanzania
The Conference Theme is “Addressing Poverty and Health in East Africa: Challenges to meeting the Millennium Development Goals”. Deadline for abstract submission is December 31st, 2007.
 
3rd Regional Pneumococcal Symposium
February 13 - 14, 2008
Istanbul, Turkey
